Youhana sets up cakewalk victory over Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG, Jan 18: Yousuf Youhana struck an unbeaten 204 on Friday to set up a crushing Pakistan victory by an innings and 169 runs on the third day of the second Test against Bangladesh.

After Pakistan had declared their first innings closed at 465 for nine, captain Waqar Younis and fellow fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar took four wickets each as Bangladesh were bundled out for 148.

Pakistan won the first of the two-Test series by an innings and 178 runs.

Man-of-the-match Youhana who scored his previous best 203 against New Zealand last year, hit two sixes off Majurul Islam plus 34 boundaries in his 313-minute innings. He gave only one chance on 113 when Fahim Muntasir dropped a caught-and-bowled opportunity on Thursday.

Opening bowler Mohammad Sharif took a career best four for 98.

Bangladesh then folded as Waqar and Shoaib grabbed four for 36 and four for 48 respectively. Off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq took the two other wickets for 34 runs.

Shoaib, replacing the injured Wasim Akram after being cleared twice of throwing, missed a hat trick chance in the 38th over, which was split into two parts for the tea break.

He first bowled Fahim Muntasir for two with a superb yorker on the third delivery then bowled Mohammad Sharif with his next delivery. Manjural Islam successfully defended the next ball to deprive the Pakistan fast bowler of first test hat-trick.

Habibul Bashar was the only batsman to stand up to the bowling, scoring 51 from 50 balls with eight fours in 77 minutes before he was caught at forward short-leg by Shadab Kabir off Saqlain.

Younis said the series victory was a useful warmup for the series against West Indies starting on neutral territory in Sharjah this month.

Both teams agreed to play in Sharjah after West Indies declined to tour Pakistan because of security fears over the border standoff with India.

“We are confident of winning against the West Indies as we are a fully balanced team with experienced and promising players capable of facing any strong side in the world,” Younis told Reuters.
