LAHORE, Jan 17: The tenure of University of Engineering and Technology Vice-Chancellor Lt-Gen Muhammad Akram (retired) has been extended for another four years.

The Punjab governor, who is also chancellor of the UET, has approved the extension with effect from February 28 this year.

Mr Akram told Dawn that he would continue to work to raise the standard of the university. He said that more emphasis would be on research and postgraduate teaching.

He said the federal government would also give around Rs195 million to the university to establish an endowment fund to grant scholarships to PhD, M.Phil and top MSc students.

Research supervisors would also be paid from the interest of the endowment fund.

The university was also working to establish different institutes to promote research. The ministry of science and technology was also funding to establish a National Library for Engineering Sciences at the university.

An Oman Chair for Information Technology was also being created to promote research in the field of information technology. He said the finances for the chair were being provided by the Oman government.

Similarly, the Punjab government had finalized some Rs100 million project to establish Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Sciences on the UET campus.
