KARACHI, Jan 17: Following the directives of Sindh minister for transport, labour, industries and local government Dewan Muhammad Yousuf Farooqui, the City District Government is working on re-routing plan for the heavy vehicles in Karachi.
The plan will also include re-structured timings of plying such vehicles on the city roads. The plan for inter-city heavy traffic is expected to be finalised by the end of this month.
The minister, who presided over a meeting here on Thursday convened to review the progress of city traffic and transport schemes, directed the officials to expedite the work on the plan so that it could be enforced without delay.
The meeting was attended by provincial Secretary of Transport Raja Muhammad Abbas, Executive District Officer Transport City Government Malik Zaheerul Islam, Secretary of Provincial Transport Authority and Deputy Secretary of Transport.
EDO Transport informed the minister that 20 bus stops have been identified in Saddar Town where boards inscribed with route numbers of buses and mini-buses would be installed by end of this month with a view to facilitate the commuters. This would also help improve traffic flow in the area which is one of the most congested localities of the city.
The minister it would also be ensured that the public transport stops at the specified points. He expected that these measures would also ease the traffic congestion.
Dewan Yousuf was further informed that the traffic police had taken steps to ensure smooth flow of traffic on Sharea Faisal and the public transport had been made to adopt at the specified lanes and stops.
As regards Malir river bridge, where a recent accident had claimed several lives, the minister was informed that the City Government had started work on erecting grills and other supports, including road dividers at the bridge.—PPI
