Security force, smugglers exchange fire

By Our Correspondent

WANA, Jan 16: Tension mounted in the South Waziristan Agency as the personnel of tribal security force exchanged fire with smugglers at the Angoor Adda on Wednesday.

More paramilitary troops and armoured personnel carriers reached the troubled area from Wana to control the situation as the political administration engaged the tribal elders and religious leaders in talks to effect a ceasefire.

The security force had impounded two trucks carrying smuggled goods while crossing the Pakistan-Afghan border illegally into South Waziristan.

The smugglers tried to prevail upon the authorities to release the vehicles, but they were disappointed, which led to exchange of heavy fire. No loss of life was reported.
