HYDERABAD: Landlords urged to keep accounts of Haris’ share

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Jan 14: The central committee, Sindhi Hari Tahrik, at a meeting held here the other day discussed the problems faced by the peasants of the province and resolved to find out ways and means to protect the rights of the tillers of the land.

Gul Hassan Keerano presided over the meeting.

The meeting observed that one of the major problems of the haris was that the landlords did not keep any account of them and their share in the agricultural produce.

It noted that the names of the haris were not registered in the “Khasra” so they could be easily ejected from the land, without clearing their account, violating the Tenancy Act which stipulated that a hari could not be ejected from the land unless he failed to till the land properly or work unsatisfactorily.

The meeting further observed that the Tapedars and Mukhtiarkars did not change the “Khatas” especially “Fauti Khatas” (the record of the deceased) without taking a heavy amount of money.

The meeting noted that Fauti Khatas of even three generations had not been changed because the applicants were not in a position to pay money.

The meeting resolved to mount a campaign to discourage such malpractice and to assist haris and small Khatedars of the province in changing of Khatas.

It further resolved that the Sindh Hari Tahrik would also strive for free medical facilities to the hari families through the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution and old-age pension through the Employees Old-age Benefit Institution scheme.

It further resolved to work towards getting agricultural labour rights for the haris and for the establishment of the hari courts.

SLA: The chairman, Sindhi Language Authority, Dr Mohammad Qasim Bughio, has thanked the vice chancellor of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Dr Abdur Rehman Memon, for donating a P-III computer to the authority for the promotion of Sindhi language.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Dr Bughio said that if other institutions, organizations and individuals continued to extend support the SLA, it would evolve new schemes for the development and promotion of Sindhi language.
