Unesco DG, Egyptian team meet president


ISLAMABAD, Jan 10: Unesco Director-General Koichiero Matsura called on President General Pervez Musharraf here on Thursday and discussed regional situation, UN plans for rehabilitation and reconstruction in Afghanistan and its projects in Pakistan.

The President appreciated Unesco’s help to Pakistan in the educational sector and for the preservation of archaeological heritage of the country. Education Minister Zubaida Jalal was also present in the meeting.

Later, the director-general met Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar. He is scheduled to leave for Afghanistan on Friday.

EGYPTIAN TEAM: A delegation of a leading Egyptian conglomerate, ARTOC Group for Investment and Development, led by Shafik Gabr called on President General Pervez Musharraf here on Thursday and discussed with him the investment environment in Pakistan.

Shafik Gabr showed keen interest in investments in the petroleum, oil and gas as well as trade and other sectors.

The president apprised him of the government’s economic reforms, privatization programme and other steps that had been taken to provide predictable environment and incentives for both the domestic and foeign investors in Pakistan.

The president stressed upon the role and contribution which the private sector could make in bringing investment and economic revival of the country.

He said that Muslim entrepreneurs should come forward and avail themselves of the excellent investment opportunities available, and the promising businessmen should explore the possibility of investing in each others’ countries.

Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz and Chairman, Board of Investment (BoI) Waseem Haqqi were also present during the meeting. —APP
