NEW DELHI, Jan 9: Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on Wednesday said India should not launch attacks on alleged guerilla camps in Pakistan as it was “unnecessary and unwise”.
Peres told reporters in the southern Indian city of Bangalore while Israel supported India’s fight against terrorism, he would not advise military strikes against ‘terrorist camps’ in Pakistani territory.
“I would not dare to advise the Indian government to do it. I don’t think it is needed nor is it wise,” he said.
However, when reporters pointed out that Israel attacked Palestinian targets within the Palestinian Authority, Peres said: “We do it when nobody else is doing it. I understand that India too prefers that terrorism would stop. I don’t think India and Israel have any choice but to settle it by ourselves.”
Condemning the Dec 13 terror attack on India’s parliament, Peres said India was trying to deescalate tensions with Pakistan without going to war and without compromising its security and territorial integrity.
He said he hoped there would be no war between India and Pakistan.
The Israeli minister said his country was willing to help India fight terrorism if a request was made.
He said Israel favoured peace in the Middle East, and accused the Palestinian leadership of not keeping its promises.
“The Palestinian forces should come to terms with reality. A political solution has to be found for the problem.”—dpa
