HYDERABAD: Govt decision not to buy wheat criticized

HYDERABAD, Jan 8: The additional secretary general, Sindh Abadgar Board, Dr Zulfiqar Yousufani expressed concern over the decision of the government not to purchase wheat from the growers next year under pressure from the IMF.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said that if the government failed to lift wheat according to the official rate the growers would be deprived of a just price for their crops and would suffer huge losses.
He said the only beneficiaries under the circumstances will be businessmen and the growers will be forced to switch over to other crops.
He pointed out that it was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that the country had become self-sufficient in wheat but the situation would be reversed if the government failed to purchase wheat on official rate.
He demanded the government to increase the official purchase price of wheat from Rs300 to Rs400 per maund as its production cost had increased by 30 per cent.
CONFERENCE: The faculty of Islamic Studies, University of Sindh, is holding a national Seerat conference on Jan 31 and Feb 1 for the first time.
The decision regarding it was taken at a meeting of the management committee held on Tuesday.
The vice chancellor of the University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, presided over the meeting.
The meeting chalked out a minute-to-minute programme and finalized the arrangements for the delegates who will be attending the conference from different parts of the country.
The management committee also constituted various sub-committees to look after the arrangements of the conference.
The Sindh governor will inaugurate the Seerat Conference on Jan 31 in which eminent scholars of international repute from the universities of Pakistan will read their research papers in various sessions.
The meeting was attended by Prof Ferozuddin Qazi, registrar, Dr Mumtaz Bhutto, dean, Faculty of Islamic Studies, other deans of different faculties, senior professors, and other officials concerned of the university.
MONOGRAPH: The director, Institute of Business Administration, University of Sindh, announced on Tuesday that the last date for submission of Research Monographs for the 5th semester and business internship for the 6th semester MBA evening programme 2001 has been fixed for Jan 31.
The concerned students have been advised to submit their reports on or before Jan 31.
