20 wickets fall on first day


KARACHI, Jan 5: Bowlers dominated opening day’s play in the Patron’s Trophy grade-II match between Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) and University Grants Commission as 20 wickets fell in the three-day match at Asghar Ali Shah Stadium Saturday.

Medium-pacer Ovais Athar snapped up five wickets for 32 and left-arm spinner Adnan Kaleem grabbed three for 28 as UGC put bat first bundled out for 85 in their first innings.

Debutant KESC in reply were spun out for 167 in their first innings. Left-arm spinner Mamoon Khan captured six wickets for 50 runs in 21.4 overs. Pacer Raheel Siyani took three wickets for 45 runs.

Tahir Khan top-scored for electricians with 50 with five four and a six in 85 minutes while Mohammad Masroor slammed six boundaries in his 45 off as many balls.

Services Industries made 222 for nine wickets against PTCL.

Service Industries started poorly after their captain Nafees Ahmed won the toss and batted first. The openers Kashif Nazami (1) and Shahjan Malik (4) went cheaply.

However, Shahbaz Butt and Kashif Imran steadied the innings and added 107 runs for the third wicket. Shahbaz hit 79 and Kashif contributed 46.

Farhan Asghar also hit up a fine 63 to steer Services Industries to 222 for nine at the end of 80 overs.

In reply, PTCL were zero without loss at close after facing just one over.
