Wapda takes steps to protect installations

ISLAMABAD, Jan 3: Wapda have taken all possible security measures to protect its water and power installations, including dams, generation plants, grid stations, distribution systems and transmission lines, for any emergency.

Wapda Chairman Lt-Gen Zulfiqar Ali Khan said this on Thursday, while talking to newsmen after the inauguration of a workshop on “Change Management Programme”.

The inaugural ceremony of the workshop, organized by Pesco, was held here at the auditorium of Wapda Staff College.

Mr Khan said the country was passing through a critical situation and “we have taken all possible security measures to save our water and power installations during such untoward situation. We are well aware and working on all possibilities to meet an emergency.”

Security around the installations had been tightened and staff deployed with a sensitive system to keep the head office well aware of the situation, he added.

Replying to a question, the Wapda chairman dispelled the impression of the replacement of chief executives of some distribution companies.

He said all the grid stations established in the areas of the distribution companies had been given under the control of respective chief executives and that chief engineers of Wapda would be posted in the companies to assist the chief executives technically.

By taking various measures, he said, Wapda had reduced theft and distribution losses to 25 per cent from 32 per cent, excluding three per cent generation and seven per cent transmission losses. He hoped that about two per cent more losses would be reduced during that year.

Answering another question, Mr Khan warned that action would be taken against those officials, who were found guilty of sending detection bill for more than three months.

In order to provide better services round the clock, he said, services centres were being set up at district level and the number of the centres would be increased gradually.—APP
