KARACHI, Jan 3: Unidentified assailants shot a prayer leader to death in Surjani Town on Thursday night.
The police said that Maulana Sanaullah Darkhwasti, aged 40, prayer leader at Masjid-i-Usman Ghani in Sector 4-B in Surjani Town, was on his was home after Isha prayers, when three unidentified assailants intercepted him near Masjid-i-Quba. The assailants sprayed him with bullets and escaped.
SSP West Dr Tariq Khokhar told Dawn that Maulana Darkhwasti suffered at least three bullet wounds and died on the spot.
He said that the motive behind the killing has not been ascertained immediately, but we are working on it.
The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem. Tension gripped the area after the killing and shopkeepers pulled down their shutters.
PRISONERS EXTORTION: Six prisoners lodged in Karachi Central Jail complained that the jail authorities were extorting them, but the prison authorities accused them of attempting suicide.
The jail authorities brought six prisoners, Nadeem, Mir Mohammed, Kamran, Abdul Samad, Tufail Rehan and Mohammed Ali, to PIB police station on a charge of attempting suicide before entering their barrack No 11.
However, the PIB police said that the six prisoners complained of excessive extortion by the jail authorities in the form of cash, cigarettes and other things.
The police said that the prison authorities were pressing for registration of cases against the prisoners without their medical examinations.
However, they were sent to Civil Hospital for medical examination, and the medicolegal report ruled out attempted suicide, the police added.
ROAD ACCIDENT: An eight-year-old girl died in a road accident in Ranchhore Lines on Thursday.
The police said that Sana, aged 8, was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a minibus of route D-4 near Abbasi Mor on Nishtar Road. The minibus was travelling at high speed. She was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
The police said that the minibus driver escaped from the spot.
CARJACKING: Ten vehicles — five cars and an equal number of motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Thursday, the police said.
The cars were hijacked in Darakhshan, Gizri, Saudabad, Ferozabad, and Samanabad.
The motorcycles were stolen in Nabi Bux, Jamshed Quarters, Taimuria, and Civil Lines.
ARRESTED: The police arrested a suspect in Naeem Tahir murder case. The murder was committed on Tuesday, Jan 1, in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.
The suspect, Sabir, was an officer working under Naeem Tahir, the police said.
WOUNDED: A man was shot and wounded in Nazimabad on Thursday.
The police said that two assailants, Marchand and Akram, opened fire on Abdul Rahman, aged 45, in Nazimabad in the morning and fled the scene. He was seriously wounded and rushed to Aga Khan Hospital. The police said that Rahman recently came to Karachi after wounding Nero Khan in the NWFP.
