PESHAWAR, Jan 1: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has said that the government will extend the devolution plan to tribal areas.

He was speaking at a presentation by the task force on Federally Administered Tribal Areas, and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas at the Governor’s House on Tuesday, said a handout.

After the devolution plan was introduced in the tribal areas, he said, the government would set up a law and order committee in each political agency which would unanimously take decisions to establish the writ of the government in the changed scenario.

The proposed committees would be headed by the elected representatives and their members would be nominated by the government. Such committees, he said, would ensure the implementation of government policies.

The governor said: “We should work out the parameters for the new system of governance. We should be clear in our approach and we should be clear how to achieve our targets.”

Referring to the judicial and law and order responsibilities, the governor said that these would be re-demarcated once the devolution plan was extended to the tribal belt.

About the resource distribution, the governor said that the share of Fata was less though it had more population. Actually, he said, the resource distribution was based on the basis of requirement. The matter would be taken up with the government to enhance the share of Fata in the development strategy, he added.

He directed the officials to work out the funds needed for the introduction of the devolution plan in the tribal areas.

The presentation was also attended by provincial ministers Abbas Khan, Aminullah Gandapur and Farid Rehman. It discussed recommendations of the task force.
