Fanim strides to victory

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 30: The bay mare Fanim, ridden flawlessly by the riding boy Faisal, strode to an easy win in supporting event of the 12th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Backed at 40 to 100 on, the five-year-old Fanim (Fan Tan- Imative) defeated the bay horse Half Love by five clear lengths in this fourth event of the day, a class V & IV combined handicap race run over a mile.

Despite carrying a heavy impost of 10 stone 3 lbs, the chestnut horse Great Grandy fought well to finish third, another seven-and-a-three  quarters of a length back while the chestnut colt Good Justice completed the frame, two-and-a-half lengths further behind. In all, ten ran in this race.

Midway through the mile race, Fanim was running at third spot but as soon as heads turned for the straight, the riding boy Faisal prompted her into action and she responded quickly, flashing past the front-runners. Later, she lengthened away to win by a good margin of five lengths.

Fanim clocked one minute 40 3/5 seconds over a mile in an easy victory.

The neglected bay colt Sarfrosh, in a fine front-running display, outpaced his six rivals to clinch feature event, the Christmas Cup run over seven furlongs.

Partnered by jockey Azeem Pervaiz, Sarfrosh (Hataf-Lady Sara) beat stablemate, the bay filly Cisco Magic (Cisco Well-Con Them All), by three-quarter of a length in a thrilling  finish. The dark-bay filly Storm Bird (Dexter-Neptune Dancer) finished third, two-and-half lengths further behind while another bay filly Royal Soul (Al Trui-Annabelle) completed the board. Jockey Shahid Rehman,

partnering Cisco Magic, did his best to catch the front-runner Sarfrosh but jockey Azeem Pervaiz on Sarfrosh never let him come close. He kept Sarfrosh ahead until he passed the finishing post. The winner clocked one minute 28 1/5 seconds over seven furlongs.

Surprisingly, the former hockey Olympian Munir Dar, owner of both Sarfrosh and Cisco Magic, had fancied the latter to win but the result of the race came out opposite to his selection!

The rank-outsider colt Silver Charm sprang the biggest upset of the day by winning the opener with the riding boy Azhar Hussain in the saddle. In the

same event, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards were not satisfied with handling of the riding boy Nadeem Ikram of the favourite Popeye Well.

Popeye Well finished fourth. Not being satisfied with Nadeem’s  explanation, they suspended him from races for one month.

The chestnut mare Darling Of The Royalty was the most outstanding performer of the day in the sixth and last event  of the afternoon. Jockey Wajid Hussain, who rode the mare just sat still only guiding her on the right course and won the event  by eleven lengths. Thus she became darling of the race-goers.
