KARACHI: Fishmongers face problems

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 28: More than 100 fishmongers in Karachi Fish Harbour have been facing economic hardships since 1996 because authorities have yet to arrange a proper site for their settlement.

The fishmongers had been engaged in peeling off fish and its sale inside the harbour for years and were asked to shift their business outside the harbour as part of a cleanliness drive during an EU team’s visit.

At that time the fisheries authorities had promised to provide them alternative retailer shops so that they could continue business. The fishmongers had later on set up temporary shops near the gate of the harbour at an open space, but that too were removed by the KPT.

An elderly man told this reporter that he had been engaged in the trade for the last 30 years. He said he had been running from pillar to post urging the authorities to arrange for an alternative site.
