LAHORE, Dec 26: Traffic police on Wednesday organized a walk on The Mall to create awareness about traffic rules.
Participated in by schoolchildren and people from other walks of life, the walk was led by Punjab traffic DIG Hameed Aslam Malik and Lahore traffic SSP Lt-Col Zaheerul Hasan.
The walk started from Nasser Bagh and ended at the Faisal Square. The participants had placards inscribed with traffic rules.
Addressing the participants, the DIG said the walk was meant to attract the attention of people plying vehicles on roads to create a traffic sense among them. Speeding was not only dangerous for drivers and commuters but it also endangered the life of pedestrians, he said.
DIG Malik said the rate of accidents could be brought down considerably by control the speed.
The DIG asked the people to be patient while driving to avoid eventuality.
Later, the DIG and the SSP also met drivers and owners of several vehicles passing through The Mall and talked with them about the traffic flow and steps being taken to improve it.
WARNING TO TRANSPORTERS: Earlier, the SSP presided over a meeting of representatives of all the transporters’ unions of the city at his office. He warned them that no concession would be given to those found involved in speeding, rash driving and misbehaving with commuters. No smoke emitting vehicles would be allowed to ply on roads, he added.
The SSP warned the drivers of commercial vehicles that strict action would be taken against those found using pressure horns and picking and dropping passengers on the places other than specified stops.
The SSP made clear to the representatives that route permit of those vehicles which did not complete their route would be cancelled.
SSP Zaheer asked the participants of the meeting that owners and drivers of the commercial vehicles should get a fitness certificate. Otherwise, their route permit would be cancelled.
The SSP asked his force to keep a vigil on joyriders. He requested the people to discourage their children from zigzagging and racing their motorcycles.
