Freed Canadian on list of top Al Qaeda men
WASHINGTON, Dec 26: An Egyptian-born Canadian citizen freed after Prime Minister Jean Chretien intervened on his behalf is one of nine Arabs on a list of Al Qaeda members most wanted by the United States, according to a newspaper.
The Washington Post reported that a list circulated by Afghan militia leader Hazrat Ali’s group names Ahmad Said Al-Kadr as one of nine Arabs most wanted by the US.
Kadr, 53, is an Egyptian-born Canadian citizen who operated the Afghanistan branch of a Canada-based charity.
Pakistani police detained Kadr in connection with the Nov 1995 bombing of the Egyptian embassy in Islamabad, but freed him after Chretien raised the issue with then-prime minister Benazir Bhutto.—AFP
