Rival captains satisfied with outcome

BANGALORE, Dec 23: Saurav Ganguly, who led India to a 1-0 series triumph over England, praised the visitors Sunday for fighting back strongly after losing the opening match of the three-Test series in less than four days.

“The Englishmen came back well in the series. They played good cricket, both at Ahmedabad and here in Bangalore,” Ganguly told reporters after the fifth day was washed out by rain.

“I thought we played pretty well in Mohali but not at Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Our batting has to be worked on. We did not do well enough.

“But, in the last six or seven months, we have bowled pretty well. In this series Anil (Kumble), (Javagal) Srinath and Harbhajan (Singh) bowled well.”

India won the first Test in Mohali by 10 wickets but then struggled to save the second match in Ahmedabad. England held the upper hand again in Bangalore before rain had the final word.

“We’ve played some good cricket over the last 10 days,” England captain Nasser Hussain said.

“Even in Mohali, it was just one bad two-hour session that pegged us back after we were 200-odd for three,” he added.

Hussain applauded his young team’s efforts, adding that the India tour had been a good learning experience for newcomers like Matthew Hoggard, Richard Dawson and James Foster.

“In the last four to five weeks, the youngsters have learnt more than they had learnt in a year in England. They have improved rapidly and I’m very proud of them,” he said.—Reuters
