Outsider Sarfrosh runs away with Kamalia Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 23: The rank outsider bay colt Sarfrosh hacked the field to win Kamalia Cup run over six furlongs during the 11th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse before a moderate  crowd on Sunday.

Piloted by riding boy M Jehangir, Sarfrosh ran close on heels of the front-bunch runners Half Love, Kargil Tiger and Dilnasheen II in the initial stages of the race. After negotiating the final turn of the oval-shaped race track, Sarfrosh made a spirited bid on the rails and shot into lead.  He maintained his supremacy till the finishing post, defeating the bay Half Love by three-fourth of a length. The odds-on favourite bay mare Fanim came from far behind to finish third by a neck’s margin from Dilnasheen II, who completed the board.

Owned by the hockey Olympian Munir Ahmad Dar and trained by Choudhry Zahid Rashid, the colt Sarfrosh clocked one minute 13 4/5 seconds over the distance. This was the third race of the day in which 13 competed after the withdrawal of Woodoo Dancer and Birju.

In the supporting event, the Sahiwal Plate, a term race for the  three-year-old colts and fillies, the dark-bay colt Popeye Well put up a bold performance to land the spoils. He beat Dane Hill Dancer by two-and-a-three quarter of lengths. Easy To Listen, ran in front position for the most part of the six- furlong race, but finally settled for third position, four lengths further behind while Sea Cadet finished fourth. Only five ran in this fourth event of the day after the last-minute withdrawal of Shinning Princess. The winner clocked one minute 15 4/5 seconds.

Munir Ahmad Dar had a successful day when two of his colts Sarfrosh and Cisco Magic romped home in the third and sixth races of the afternoon. Riding boy M. Jehangir excelled in the saddle by bringing home a brace of winners through Sarfrosh and Burfi in the third and fifth races, respectively.
