MULTAN, Dec 21: Contractors have abandoned the repair of road cuts caused by the PTCL for the last two months as the Multan Municipal Corporation is not releasing funds.
In June 2001, the PTCL had dug up 28 kilometre area of Hazore Bagh Road, Kahhari Road, Water Works Road, Eidgah Road, Masoom Shah Road, Abdali Road, Hassan Parvana Road and Circular Road. The colonies affected by digging include Writers Colony, Shareefpura, New Multan, Sadiq Colony, Khan Colony, Abdali Colony, Guldeen Colony, Mehmoodabad and Ansarabad.
By the end of June, the PTCL had paid Rs2.4 million to MMC for the repair of roads and streets in these colonies. Work on the project was started in July, but the MMC has so far paid only Rs400,000 to contractors.
A contractor told this correspondent that nine contractors had to be paid before Eid, but they could not get the payment due to the tehsil municipal officer’s leave.
An MMC engineer on the condition of anonymity also attributed the delay in repair work to the lengthy procedure of payment to contractors. Since the administration was new, it was reluctant to issue cheques to contractors fearing that there might be something wrong in the whole process, he said.
When contacted, the TMO was not available in his office for his comments on the issue.
Scores of public representatives also raised their voice to get the problems addressed, but to no avail.
