KARACHI Dec 19: Jockey Raees Ahmad began from where he had left off in the last race meeting by once again stealing the limelight at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting that got under way at the Karachi Racecourse Wednesday.

Raees, who registered a splendid treble that day, rode home a brace of winners when he piloted home Baby Face and Bold Commander in the third and concluding events, which enabled seasoned trainer A. Hannan join in the celebrations.

Baby Face taking over the running approaching the bend, never looked back and sprinted home like a champion, winning by a street from nearest rival Hogan, an entry from Lahore. Aziz Love after having Shehzad replace Azeem in the saddle at the starting gate, was third and Mark after two triumphs in a row had to be content with the fourth spot.

Raees had another easy ride on Bold Commander. When the race began, Al Jarrar with Ahmed aboard, tried runaway tactics, but Bold Commander striding out confidently collared the front runner near the bend.

From there on it was Bold Commander all the way, with Al Jarrar in the far distance finishing second. A further distance behind came Inferno with the Happy News completing the frame.

The opening race of the afternoon was bagged by M. Iqbal’s bay mare Baa Wafa, winning the race as she pleased from Royal Springs. Sunday Silence lying sixth when heads turned for home came in with a flying burst to pip Shining Rock at the winning post to grab the third position.

The next race was picked up by Just in Fun with M. Mazhar in the saddle. But the bay gelding bleeding profusely from the nostrils, had a difficult time to overtake front runner Atish Fishan and then go on to win the race from Tanveer-e-Sehar.

In a big field of 18 runners in the fourth race, teenager Asif Sullah did a wonderful job in steering Khalida Yasmin’s Satellite Star to victory after being engaged in a keen tussle with Shahdad Star in the home stretch. Asif’s father former champion jockey Sullah trained the winner.

Feasible partnered by riding boy M. Amjad, upset all calculations by sprinting to victory in the fifth race of the afternoon. Welcome Shahtab, was second after the Stewards replaced riding boy Arif Nazir with Kashif Ali, while Al Zarrar, leading for most part of the race, managed to hold off the favourite Pari Pakar for pick up the third spot.

The next race meeting is scheduled for Christmas Day, Dec 25.
