Bootleggers trade fire with police on Eid

By Our Correspondent

SAHIWAL, Dec 19: Harappa police and narcotics dealers exchanged fire for an hour on Eid day in Chak Baudi Nathu Mir on the bank of River Ravi.

Three people, Fazal Qadir, Yousuf Abbas Kathia and Azmat, were finally arrested but about 10 made good their escape.

The police also unearthed a distillery from the place and seized 150 bottles of wine.

Police sources said the bootleggers had planned to market wine in Sahiwal and Chichawatni.

MURDERED: A police constable and his nephew allegedly killed a man over a Rs1,000 dispute on Tuesday.

The volleyball teams led by Intizar Husain and Bilal were said to have bet Rs1,000 on the outcome of the match. After losing the match, the team led by Bilal refused to pay up. This led to an argument but the village elders prevented a clash. Bilal felt insulted and asked his uncle, Ashraf, a police constable, to help him avenge the affront. Bilal and Ashraf then reportedly shot Intizar Husain while he was passing through the village bazaar.

BODY FOUND: The body of a man, aged about 40 years, was found lying in the red light area on Eid day.

It was buried after an autopsy which indicated excessive drinking.
