OKARA, Dec 15: Zakat should only be distributed among the poor and deserving persons.
This was stated here on Saturday by district coordination officer Khalid Masood Chaudhry while chairing a meeting of the district zakat committee.
District Zakat Officer Rana Sajjad Badar told the meeting that under special allowance Rs4.89 million would be distributed equally to 981 zakat committees in the district. Besides, Rs11.8 million had also been allocated from Zakat fund for scholarships to the poor students.
He said a committee had been formed for the scrutiny of the deserving applicants.
CURRENCY NOTES: Commercial banks with the exception of the National Bank of Pakistan have refused to accept currency notes of Re1 and Rs2 even before the expiry date Dec 31, 2001.
Citizens have asked the State Bank to take notice of the issue and direct the banks to abide by the official deadline.
TRAINING: The Agriculture department will train agriculturists and landlords in plant protection to achieve self-sufficiency.

RUN OVER: A student of 7th class was run over by a speeding truck (LT-1357) near fruit and vegetables market on the Eidgah Road.
Zubair Hussain of Shamsia Colony was crossing the road when he met an accident. He sustained severe injuries and was shifted to the local DHQ Hospital where he died.
