KARACHI: Heaps of garbage in Malir on the eve of Eid

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 15: Heaps of garbage are lying uncleared at roadsides, streets, lanes and bylanes in Khokhrapar and Saudabad areas of Malir on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Conditions are so filthy in these localities that one finds it difficult to keep from vomiting.

Residents said uncleared garbage had been lying at the roadsides on Malir Extension Road, Begum Khursheed Road, Malir City Road, but the officials concerned of Malir Town were taking no interest in getting them removed, not even on the eve of Eid. Garbage and gutter water had also collected at the entrance of mosques.

They deplored that they had not seen refuse-collecting vans in their localities for a long time, though garbage was supposed to be removed after every 2-3 days.

A perturbed resident of Khokhrapar said it seemed that the municipality concerned had stopped lifting garbage even from garbage dumping sites.

Another resident said a filthy atmosphere had been prevailing in the locality for the past one fortnight, and now it had become so bad that one felt nausea wile walking the streets and roads.

“Even in countries where Muslims are in a minority civic agencies take special care to remove garbage from Muslim localities on the occasion of Eid, but it is simply, tragically and ironically unbelievable to see heaps of garbage lying uncleared in residential areas in a Muslim country,” he said.

Water shortage: Several blocks of Federal B’ Area faced water shortage on Saturday owing to a major power breakdown which occurred in their area and at local pumping stations on Friday night.

People residing in F. B. Area’s blocks 5, 6, 10 and 11 said since their localities had remained without electricity between 6 pm on Friday and 3.30 am on Saturday, they did not even get a single drop of water although it was their turn of receiving water.

They complained that although they kept on contacting the concerned KESC offices to know the causes of power failures, no one responded to their calls.

Residents of multi-storied buildings complained that although they had water in their underground tanks, they could not pump it out to their upper floors due to non-availability of electricity.

Complaints of acute water shortage have also been received from other parts of the city.

Most of the complaints have been received from the residents of Old Golimar, Lyari’s Dariabad, Phul Patti Lane, Agra Taj Colony, North Karachi’s Sectors 11-C-1, 11-C-3, 5-A and Nazimabad No 3.

Residents of the affected localities said that in spite of acute water shortage that had been persisting in their localities since long, the KWSB’s concerned officials have not yet taken measures to help resolve their lingering water issue.

They demanded of the KWSB managing director to direct the chief engineer and other concerned officials to immediately restore normal supply in their localities, or else they would go without water on Eid days.
