Forgettable Test occasion for Waughs

ADELAIDE, Dec 14: Steve and Mark Waugh won’t fondly recall their 100th Test cricket match together after cheap dismissals against South Africa here Friday.

The twin brothers were presented with inscribed bowls made of crystal and silver before the start of play in the first Test to mark the occasion.

But it didn’t pan out for the 36-year-olds, with both on the way cheaply in Australia’s 272 for six by stumps on the opening day.

Mark Waugh was out for two to a poor shot to Nantie Hayward just three minutes before tea when he was caught behind by Mark Boucher.

Steve Waugh scratched around for 42 minutes for his eight before he walked shaking his head in disgust.

He was cranky when quickly given out by Indian umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan to a catch close in to Neil McKenzie off left-arm spinner Claude Henderson.

Waugh played forward, the ball spiralling off his leading pad and it was unclear whether it came off a glove before being snapped up by McKenzie for eight.

The Australian captain has made just 86 runs in five innings since recovering from a deep vein thrombosis, averaging 17.20.

Mark Waugh has fared a little better but is well down on his usual efforts, making 142 runs at 28.40 this summer.

Their combined average so far this season of 45 is less than half their combined career average of about 94.

MELBOURNE: Queensland beat Tasmania by 10 wickets midway through the second day of their four-day match in Brisbane on Friday to set a record for Australia interstate matches.

Scores at the close of play Friday:

In Melbourne, day two: South Australia 229 (Ben Johnson 138 not out) and 74-2, Victoria 405 (Cameron White 91, Paul Reiffel 75; Paul Rofe 4-101).

In Brisbane, day two: Queensland beat Tasmania by 10 wickets. Tasmania 100 (Andy Bichel 4-54) and 82 (Michael Kasprowicz 4-22), Queensland 132 (Shane Jurgensen 4-16) and 51-0.

In Sydney, day one: New South Wales 215 (Brad Haddin 50; Kade Harvey 4-43), Western Australia 147-2 (Scott Meuleman 60, Mike Hussey 55 not out).—AFP/Reuters
