Three Nazims resign from sub-committees

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, Dec 14: Nazims of three union councils of Ghakkhar town resigned from sub-committees on Friday in protest against the district government failure to provide funds for the development works in their constituencies.

Nazims of union council No 1 Chaudhry Muhammad Jamil Hinjra, No 2 Muhammad Amjad Raza and Nat Kalan Mehr Abdul Khaliq, handed over their resignations to district council Naib Nazim Haji Gohar Zaman.

Addressing a joint press conference in Ghakkhar town, they said since assumption of their office on August 14 last, a number of projects like water supply and sewerage schemes were pending for want of funds. While they have no funds in hand, residents of their areas pressurized them to complete the schemes as soon as possible.

They said salaries of low-paid employees, including sanitary workers, could not be paid and they were also pressing them to pay their salaries immediately.

They said they have informed tehsil and district councils of their problems but all in vain. They said they would plan their future line of action after Eidul Fitr.

Meanwhile, district Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha assured that work on all pending uplift schemes would start in January next.

Iftar dinner: Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam) activists and Nazims of various union councils criticized former MNA Col Ghulam Sarwar Cheema (retired) during an Iftar party in Wazirabad on Thursday night in the presence of party chief Mian Azhar and demanded that he should be expelled from the party.

The supporters of Mr Cheema also stood up and exchanged hot words with their rivals. The Nazims of union councils threw chairs on each other.

The opposite group alleged that the deposed MNA who was incharge of the campaign in local body elections distributed party tickets among his supporters as a result of which the party suffered defeat.

Former MPA Chaudhry Shaukat Hayat Chattha and others appealed to the opposing faction to end their difference in the interest of party.

The audience became silent when stage secretary called Mian Azhar to deliver his speech. He assured the party workers that their views would be given weight while formulating future strategy and their genuine problems resolved.

He expressed the hope that the government would hold general elections next year.
