PESHAWAR: Reform schools for juvenile offenders proposed

PESHAWAR, Dec 14: Participants of a seminar have proposed that instead of sending juvenile offenders to prison, reform schools should be established for them.
According to a Press release issued here on Thursday, the seminar on “Juvenile Justice System and Rights of Children” was arranged by Dost Welfare Foundation here at a local hotel.
Zakir Shoaib of Dost Foundation explained the plight of children imprisoned in different jails.
He said that they had been living in miserable conditions. He also read out a letter written by a juvenile offender.
District Naib Nazim Dr Iqbal Khalil said in the local government system different committees had been formed for different functions. He stated that special committees were established on union, town, tehsil and district level.
Shirin Niaz of Save the Children said people had to adopt special measures for dealing with the issues facing juvenile offenders.
She said that by sending them to prison problems could not be resolved.
Those who spoke on the occasion included Bureau Chief of APP Faizur Rehman, ASP City Mohammad Ali Babakhel, Superintendent Peshawar Prison Muzaffar Khan and official of SPO Mashal Khan beside others.
