Horne and Barnes put Auckland in control

AUCKLAND, Dec 13: A third wicket partnership of 265 between Matt Horne and Aaron Barnes was the highlight of the second day of the tour match between Auckland and Bangladesh Thursday as the home side made 404 for five at stumps.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 120 in their first innings.

Horne made 178, but that failed to get him into the New Zealand side for the first Test in Hamilton next week.

The former New Zealand opener went to lunch on 97, when the national selectors named an unchanged side from that which started the third Test against Australia in Perth last week.

After lunch Horne brought up his 19th first-class century then proceeded to tear into the tiring Bangladesh attack, ably supported by Barnes.

The partnership ended when Barnes was run out on 95 after a misunderstanding with Horne when both batsmen ended up at the same end.

Horne was out soon after for 178, lbw to the hard-working medium pacer Mohammad Sharif. His innings included 23 fours and four sixes.

Kyle Mills had a brief stay for a hard hit 19 before he misjudged a slower delivery from Sharif, before Nick Horsley and Auckland skipper Brooke Walker brought up a quick 50 partnership shortly before stumps.

Horsley, who made the bulk of the runs, hit his maiden first class half-century and was 57 not out at the close, with Walker on 13.
