Fine unbeaten knock by Afsar : Wussat’s splendid all-round show

KARACHI, Dec 11: An unbeaten 60 by Afsar Nawaz laced with five boundaries, enabled CDC booked a berth in the semifinal of the Paragon Cup 2001, registering a four-wicket triumph over Baqai Dolphins at the UBL A ground Tuesday.

Put into bat after losing the toss, Baqai Dolphins reached 178 for eight in their 25 allotted overs with Talha Khan (63) and Hasan Raza (54), batting well. Right-arm medium fast Sharif Abdullah three for 30 and slow-left-arm spinner two for 32, shared the bowling spoils.

Chasing 179 runs for victory, Tariq and Afsar put on 71 runs for the second wicket, which steered their team on the path to victory. Tariq in his 44-ball knock, cracked five boundaries and two huge sixes, while Afsar in his unbeaten 60, had five fours in his 59-ball knock. Atif Maqbool was the most successful bowler for CDC, with figures of two for 23. CDC now meet Paragon in the semifinals.

Airport Gym lose: Splendid off-spin bowling by Wussat Hussain, enabled Dewan Mushtaq CC hand out a four-wicket defeat to former champions Airport Gymkhana, in the 16th Karachi Gymkhana Ramazan cricket tournament played Tuesday at the Karachi Gymkhana ground.

Airport Gymkhana seems to have blown their lights out, losing their third consecutive game in as many days, in the various Ramazan trophies being played these days in the city.

Opener Agha Sabir was the only batsmen to face Wussat’s bowling with a deal of confidence, dispatching the ball five times to the boundary in his knock of 60 runs which came off 53 deliveries. But once Sabir left, Wussat five for 16 and slow left-arm Adnan Kalim two for 19, ran through the rest of the side with Airport Gymkhana limping to 118 for eight in 22 overs.

Dewan Mushtaq in reply lost Waqar Kundi quickly, but Wussat also in fine form with the willow, saw his team through to victory with an attacking 56 runs which contained five boundaries.

Dewan Mushtaq CC reached the winning score of 119 with two deliveries to spare and four wickets in hand.

Slow left-arm leg-spinner Zahid Ahmed had a fine bowling spell also, claiming four of the six wickets that fell, for only 14 runs.

Wednesday’s fixture: Malir Gymkhana v Mohammad Hussain Memorial.

Nerve tingling finish: In a nerve tingling finish, Professionals Gymkhana beat Omer CC by four runs, in the A.O. Floodlight Trophy played on Monday night at the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium. Batting first, Professionals were bowled out for 147 in 19.3 overs, with Shafiq Malik (56) and Humayun Faran (47), among the runs. Imran Khan three for eight and Imranullah two for 29, grabbed the wickets for the fielding side.

Chasing 148 runs for victory, Omer CC were restricted to 143 for nine when their 20 overs elapsed.

Malir Sports in final: Malir Sports moved into the final of the Pak Star Ramazan cricket tournament, after registering a narrow 10-run victory over Comrade Sports at the Pak Star ground.

Malir Sports batting first, raced to 196 for six in their 20 overs through aggressive batting by Naveed Zameer (58), Shoaib Lateef (32) and Nizamuddin (22), with Moiz Ahmed picking up two for 35.

Needing 197 runs for victory, Comrade Sports took up the challenge with Moiz Ahmed (57), Shehzad Majeed (40) and Imran Siddiqui (37), scoring at a brisk rate, but their gallant efforts fell short of victory when their team was bowled out for 186. Naveed Zameer had figures of two for thirty, Wednesday’s fixture: Malir Sports v Malir Cantonment Gymkhana, Pak Star ground (Final).

Zafar’s Magical spell: City Government moved into the semifinal of 11th Zamir Khan Memorial cricket tournament when they handed out eight wicket defeat on Karachi Psyclogical Hospital (KPH) at Shadab Ground Monday.

Leg spinner Muhammad Ali Zafar was the star as he took five wickets for 25 runs.

All-rounder Gohar Ali played main role in Bilal Friends five wicket success over Mir Sports. Gohar took two wickets 25 runs and scored an unbeaten 42.

Bilal Friends also joined City Govt. in the last four stage of the competition.

Summarized scores: City Govt. beat KPH by eight wickets. KPH 137-9 in 20 overs (Amjad Abbasi 77, S.M.Kamran 38; M.Ali Zafar 5-25, Sarwat Ali 2-24); City Govt. 138-2 in 17 overs (Khurram Manzoor 73 not out, Shakir Pervez 27). Bilal Friends beat Mir Sports by five wickets. Mir Sports 171 for six in 20 overs (Ahmer Saeed 50, Faraz Feroz 39, Daniyal Ahsan 25 not out; Afaq Khan 2-24, Talib Ali 2-38); Bilal Friends 172 for five in 19.5 overs (Gohar Ali 42 not out, Majeed Zaffari 39, Kamran Hussain 36; Shakil 3-22, Talib Ali 2-38).
