Hectic schedule for Pakistani cueists in 2002


KARACHI, Dec 11: Pakistani cueists will be featuring in five major international competition including SAARC contest, Asian Games, Asian and world championships and Emirates Cup in year 2002.

“Our players will take part in Pusan Asian Games, Asian championship in China, World championship in Cairo and Emirates International besides inaugural Saarc Championship” Asghar Valika, President, Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) Ali Asghar Valika told APP Tuesday.

He said year 2002 will be important for PBSA as they will be making strenuous effort to prepare strong Pakistani outfits competing in important competitions including Asian Games in Pusan (South Korea).

Valika, who is also the President South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) said inaugural South Asian Snooker team championship will be held at Dhaka in the last week of March next.

He said Asian Snooker Championship will be staged at Jiang Men City (China) from May 22 to 28, 2002. Originally Asian championship was allocated to Malaysia but later it was shifted to China by Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports.

PBSA Chief said winner and runner-up will represent Pakistan in the Asian championship in China.

He said Pakistan cueists will take part in the snooker, 9- ball pool and billiards events of the 14th Asian Games being held in Pusan from late September to October.

He said snooker, pool and billiards events will be held at Dougju College Gymnasium Pusan from Oct 1 to 8.

Valika said in between Pakistan may take part in Emirates Cup in Dubai and in October Pakistani cueists will participate in the World championship which has been re-scheduled in Cairo (Egypt) in October.

He said this year’s world championship in Cairo was cancelled due to Afghanistan crisis and that the national calendar is being chalked out and after the Provincial Cups, the National championship will be organized either in Late January or early February.

Style Snooker National Ranking Championship will be held in April and National Pool and Billiards contest will be staged in June and Red and White Cup and Latif Masters will be followed between July and September.—APP
