Brahimi to meet president today

ISLAMABAD, Dec 11: The special representative of the UN secretary general for Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, is scheduled to meet President Musharraf here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a news conference, UN Information Centre director, Eric Falt, said that during his stay in Kabul, Mr Brahimi met Dr Abdullah Abdullah and Gen Mohammad Qasim Fahim. Before dashing back to Islamabad enroute to New York, Mr Brahimi is also expected to have talks with Burhanuddin Rabbani, Mohammad Yunus Qanooni and Hamid Karzai, the designated head of the interim administration, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that Mr Brahimi would reach Islamabad on Wednesday morning. He is scheduled to have several meetings, including an appointment with President Gen Musharraf. In the afternoon, he would start making his way back to New York, the spokesperson said.

Earlier in the day, a foreign office spokesperson said that Mr Brahimi during his stop over in Islamabad discussed the progress achieved in the Bonn conference. He told the officials about steps being taken to install the interim administration in Kabul on Dec 22 and the views of Afghan leadership about the developments.
