Canal breach destroys crops

DADU, Dec 11: A 41-ft-wide breach developed in the Tatri waterway, near Usman Kalhoro village, some 13 kms from Radhan town, on Monday night owing to the apathy of irrigation department officials.

About a 1,000 acres of paddy crops, 200 acres of recently-sown wheat crops, and 50 acres of vegetables were inundated as a result of the breach.

A large number of villagers from Usman Kalhoro village along with irrigation department officials arrived on the spot and started plugging the breach.

A farmer, Ahmed Bux, told Dawn that when he went to the house of the SDO, irrigation, to inform him about the breach the latter refused to see him. So he went back to his village and informed the villagers about the breach.

EIGHT INJURED: Eight people were injured in an armed clash between Khokhar and Chandio tribesmen over a matrimonial dispute in Dallo Khokhar village, Mehar Taluka, on Tuesday.

Guns, rifles, axes, and iron rods were freely used in the clash.

All the injured were admitted to the taluka hospital Mehar under police custody.

The condition of three of the injured — Rafique Khokhar, Ghulam Shabbir and Zafar Chandio — was stated to be serious.

NARCOTICS SEIZED: On the directives of the SSP, Dadu, Mushtaque Ahmed Mehar, the Bhan Saeedabad police raided a narcotics den and arrested its owner, M Bux Halepoto, in Hajan Shah Mohalla, Mehar town, on Tuesday.

Police seized a 100 litres of locally-prepared liquor, a drum, and a huge quantity of charas.

ARRESTED: The Bhan Saeedabad police raided Mosri village, Johi Taluka, and arrested two motorcycle snatchers — Qurban Jamali and Nizamuddin Jhatial — on Tuesday and challan them under relevant law.
