KARACHI: SHC rejects state’s pleas against acquittals

KARACHI, Dec 10: The Sindh High Court’s ATA appellate bench dismissed on Monday the state’s four appeals against the acquittal of ten accused by anti- terrorism courts.
The bench consisted of Justice Ghulam Nabi Soomro and Justice Ataur Rahman.
The first appeal pertained to the acquittal of an accused, Fahimuddin, who had been booked by the New Karachi police on a car hijacking charge, but he was acquitted of the charge by the ATC I, headed by Syed Zakir Husain.
The second appeal was with regard to the acquittal of six accused who had been charged with being involved in setting a minibus on fire. The accused were Faraz, Israr Siddiqui, Kamran, Tariq Ali, Hilal Bari alias Bihari and Abdullah.
The bench upheld the judgment of the trial court.
The third appeal was against the acquittal of an alleged motorcycle hijacker who had been acquitted by a trial court. Javed Akhtar was cited as a respondent in the fourth appeal. He too had been booked in a motorcycle theft case.
RAILWAYS: The same bench also disposed of a petition filed by Azizullah Buriro challenging the detention of his brother and five other PR employees by the railway police in connection with a Rs1.1-million-robbery at Cantonment booking office on Nov 26.
When hearing began on Monday the petitioner submitted that police had released all detainees and did not press the petition. The court disposed of the matter and directed the released persons to cooperate with the police.
