KARACHI: Robbers walk off with over Rs8 million

KARACHI, Dec 10: Robbers took away millions of rupees in two bank robberies in Eidgah and Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Monday.

Two private security guards, deputed at a bank branch in Eidgah, looted the bank along with their five accomplices of Rs8.7 million.

The police spokesman, DSP Ejaz Hashmi, said two security guards Gul Marjan and Zahir Shah of the Phoenix Security Agency were posted at Muslim the Commercial Bank, Timber Market Branch, on Siddique Wahab Road in the Eidgah police limits.

In the afternoon, a head constable Mehrban, went to offer prayers after he had completed his duty. Zahir Shah also went to offer prayers and came back with five of his hooded accomplices. He asked Gul Marjan to open the door and they all entered the bank. They took the bank staff hostage at gunpoint and collected Rs8.7 million from the cash counter and the strong room.

Gul Marjan was appointed on May 31, and Zahir Shah on Oct 22, in the security agency, Ejaz Hashmi said and added that more information about the security guards was being collected to trace them and their accomplices so that they could be arrested at the earliest and the looted money could be recovered.

In another bank robbery, the bandits broke into another branck of the MCB at Hasan Square and took away Rs190,000. The police said the bandits cut the iron grills and broke open the doors and entered the bank. They looted the money and escaped.

BEATEN UP: Passengers beat up the driver and the conductor of a Metrobus at Model Colony when they teased a girl on the bus on Monday.

One of the passengers told this reporter that a girl boarded the Metrobus at Model Colony. The driver of the bus set the rear-view mirror to watch the girl who was in a veil. The conductor asked the girl if she was feeling uncomfortable, she could uncover her face. This perturbed the girl who began crying and got down from the bus.

The passengers, who had seen the behaviour of the driver and the conductor of the Metrobus (PE-4865), became angry and beat up the driver and the conductor. They demanded of the authorities to put a check on bus drivers and conductors and give deterrent punishment to those who misbehaved with women.

WOUNDED: Bandits shot and wounded a man in Orangi Town on Monday when he attempted to catch hold of a fleeing bandit.

The police said that two alleged bandits entered the house of Hafeez in Orangi Town’s Sector 11 1/2 in the afternoon. Hafeez raised alarm which confounded the bandits who ran away. Haider Abbas, aged 25, an area resident, who was near the residence of Hafeez, caught hold of one of the fleeing bandits. His accomplice fired on Haider Abbas who was wounded but did not lose his grip on the bandit.

The area people also reached there forcing the accomplice of the bandit to escape. People handed over the captured bandit to the police. Haider Abbas was admitted to a hospital.
