THATTA, Dec 9: The district council has demanded the early completion of repair and renovation work on schools, hospitals and link roads in cyclone-hit coastal areas.
This demand was made through a resolution by Dr Barkat Khawaja in a meeting on Thursday, which was presided over by Thatta District Council Chairmanship Haji Usman Malkani.
The meeting also criticized the delay in completion of various schemes for cyclone victims.
District Nazim Syed Shafqat Hussain Shah Shirazi announced the correct name of the district as ‘Thatta’ instead of ‘Thatto’ which had been written and read after the devolution of power. From now on the district would be called ‘Thatta’as before the implementation of devolution plan on August 14, 2001. He directed heads of all departments to correct the name on sign boards etc.
The house formed a six-member committee headed by Dr Barkat Khawaja and Moti Meeranpuri to find out the facts about the actual birth place of Quad-i-Azam who, according to some house members, was born in Jherruk district Thatta instead of Karachi.
The committee had been asked to minutely scan history with the help of experts to find the facts. The house also demanded of the ABDP and other institutions to waive loans given to farmers and other people of the district.
District Nazim said that during his recent meeting with President General Pervez Musharraf, he had demanded funds to construct a 200-kilometre Pucca road and vegetable market in Thatta.
