KARACHI: Pagara sees no possibility of polls next year

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 9: The Pakistan Muslim League (Functional) chief, Pir Pagara, sees no possibility of general elections in the country next year.

Answering questions from journalists, Pir Pagara, who hosted an Iftar party at his residence, Kingri House, said questions on the current political situation and the developments in and around Pakistan be left for tomorrow’s meeting where he and leaders of other political parties would be available to give their views on the TV.

Asked if the PML (Likeminded Group) chief, Mian Mohammed Azhar, had brought any formula for the unity of the PML, he said his meeting was no more than a courtesy call. “Neither he brought any formula nor I gave him any suggestion. We only exchanged views,” he added.

Replying to another question, he said those very people who had been responsible for creating factions in the party were now striving for its unity.

Asked who would head the party after the merger of different factions of the PML, he said only the PML Council of 1978 could elect new office-bearers after nominations in place of those members who died during the period.

“However, after reorganization of the party, the unified PML could effect amendments in the party constitution and redraft a new manifesto.”

When his attention was drawn to PPP leaders view that Benazir Bhutto’s visit to India was a visit of the future prime minister of Pakistan, Pir Pagara said she did not visit India in the capacity of future prime minister but as an accused facing trial in different cases before courts. Before aspiring for the prime minister’s post, she should face court cases and get herself cleared.
