HYDERABAD, Dec 7: Amnesty International (AI) Pakistan has demanded an urgent inquiry into the large-scale massacre of the Taliban forces at Qila-i-Jangi near Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan.

The secretary general of the AI Pakistan chapter, Mr Iqbal Detho in a statement faxed to Dawn has urged the UN to send an international fact finding mission to make inquiries into the carnage and added events of Qila-i-Jangi must not be brushed under the carpet like many killings in the past in Cambodia and elsewhere, as UN Security Council resolution No. 1378 on Afghanistan called upon all parties to adhere to the obligations under international humanitarian laws.

He said the resolution called for an inquiry under UN mechanism through the office of the high commissioner for human rights or UN special rapporteur for human rights about extra judicial killings and summary executions.

Mr Detho said under the laws of war and subsequent article 90 to additional protocol 1 to Geneva convention 1949, an international fact finding mission consisting 15 experts should be constituted to ascertain the facts about the slaughter.

Referring to refugees’ plight, he called upon American, British and Australian governments not to formulate such laws and policies which closed doors on refugees and asylum seekers leaving them nowhere to go.

He said these governments must not sacrifice human rights in the name of security by placing curbs over the freedom of movement.
