KARACHI: Water pipeline bursts in Lyari, supply stopped

KARACHI, Dec 7: Water supply to Lyari and its nearby localities came to a halt on Friday evening after a 33-inch dia pipeline burst near the Zoological Garden’s traffic intersection.
Water gushing out of the pipeline also hindered the smooth flow of traffic near the zoo.
Sources at the KWSB said the pipeline burst just before Iftar when its 24- inch valve near Mirza Adam Khan Road was being repaired. As a result, water supply to Lyari, Osmanabad, Dhobi Ghat, Machhar Colony and Agra Taj Colony came to a complete halt.
The sources said repair of the burst pipeline had begun, but water supply to the affected areas would be normalized by Saturday.
CAMP OFFICE: The KWSB set up on Friday a permanent camp office in Lyari to solve the locality’s long-standing water shortage problem.
The decision was taken at a meeting held between the Lyari Town’s Nazim, Abdul Khaliq Juma, KWSB’s deputy managing director (Technical Services) Aftab Ahmed, chief engineer (water distribution) Khalid Malik, chief engineer (pumping and electrical and mechanical), Mushtaq Memon and the area executive engineer.
The camp office, to be manned by the KWSB’s engineers concerned, will make efforts to improve water supply to Lyari in cooperation with the Nazim and the Naib Nazim of Lyari Town.
The KWSB managing director, Brig Behram Khan, has instructed the DMD (Technical Services), chief engineers (water distribution and electrical and mechanical) to visit the camp office at least twice a week to monitor the water supply situation in Lyari.
The meeting also decided that the valve of the 24-inch pipeline supplying water to Lyari would be operated with the consent of the Lyari Town’s Nazim, and if the system proved a success, the schedule of water supply from other smaller pumping stations of Lyari would be decided in consultation with the Nazim.
The meeting also decided to lay an 8-inch dia pipeline on Tannery Road to improve the water supply to Lyari.
KWSB officials also agreed to the suggestion of the Lyari Town’s Nazim that the 24-inch dia obsolete pipeline be replaced with a new pipeline under the Khushal Pakistan Programme to improve water supply to Chakiwara, Rangiwara, New Kalri and other water-deficient areas of Lyari.
SHORTAGE: An acute shortage of water persists in Clifton’s Block 2 and North Karachi’s sectors 11-C-3 and 11-C-4.
Residents complained that they had brought the issue to the notice of the KWSB’s officials concerned on several occasions, but they had so far not done the needful.
