WASHINGTON: Peter Bondra scored two goals, including the 400th of his career, as the Washington Capitals extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
Bondra’s milestone goal was a controversial one and gave Washington a 3-1 lead with 6:45 to go in the second period.
With the Capitals on the powerplay, he sent a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past goaltender Mike Richter just as the net came off its moorings.
Video replay official John Robinson ruled that New York’s Andreas Johansson pushed Washington captain Adam Oates into Rangers defenseman Dave Karpa, who moved the net moments after the puck crossed the goalline.
Bondra struck again 2:45 later. Andrei Nikolishin faked a shot at the left point before sending a pass to Bondra at the right side of the net and he tapped it behind Richter for his 19th goal of the season.
In New York, Keith Primeau scored a powerplay goal with 7:39 left in the game to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Islanders 3-2 on Tuesday.
