Concern at NAB’s bid to cover up scam voiced

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: The Pakistan Peoples Party has expressed concern over the alleged bid of NAB to cover up the just exposed scandal involving skimming of over a billion rupees contributed by the employees of the Employees Old-age Benefit Institution (EOBI) to their post-retirement benefit programmes.

“It is intriguing that NAB has been sleeping over its own probe, reportedly made several months ago, which revealed the fraud involving a number of bureaucrats and retired army officials, besides what it said ‘elite members of the society’”, said a PPP spokesman on Wednesday.

The absconding EOBI chairman could not have embezzled the amount alone, he said and demanded that those behind the fraud be exposed and held accountable.

According to press reports, the National Accountability Bureau investigator, who uncovered the scam in July this year, had to spend 10 days in jail at the hands of those, who wanted it covered up.

The spokesman alleged that NAB was being used as a political arm of the regime to round up political opponents, while the corrupt within the regime roamed free.
