Sheringham ends Bolton resistance

LONDON, Dec 4: England striker Teddy Sheringham pounced four minutes from time to give Tottenham Hotspur a thrilling 3-2 win over brave Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League Monday.

Sheringham directed a powerful header past goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen from Christian Ziege’s free kick to send Spurs into fifth place in the table.

It was further evidence of 35-year-old Sheringham’s longevity, and left Bolton dejected after succumbing to only their second away defeat of the season.

The visitors, who took an eighth minute lead at White Hart Lane through striker Michael Ricketts, were caught in a storm from a resurgent Spurs early in the second half.

Two goals in as many minutes from Gustavo Poyet and substitute Les Ferdinand turned the mood of the contest.

But Bolton, whose impressive form has been founded on a cautious formation away from home, hauled themselves back into the contest through Rod Wallace’s 56th-minute equaliser.

The Lancashire club even had a glorious chance to re-take the lead in the 84th minute, but as substitute Dean Holdsworth bore down on Spurs goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, defender Dean Richards rescued his side with a last-ditch tackle.

It was left to Sheringham, in his second spell with the club after re-signing on a free transfer from Manchester United in the close-season, to have the last word.

“It was a big test for the blood pressure,” manager Glenn Hoddle told Sky Sports television.—Reuters
