Sindh seeks Rs2.2m from Railways

By Shamim Shamsi

SUKKUR, Dec 3: Governor Sindh Mohammadmian Soomro ordered the provincial finance department to initiate an inquiry against the railways authorities who have failed to return the leftover amount of Rs.2.2 million to the Sindh government given to them for maintenance of Lansdown Bridge, Sukkur.

The inquiry was ordered on the complaint of Mr.Iqbal Dawood Pakwala, acting Nazim of Sukkur, who recently informed the governor that the Lansdown Bridge was handed over by the Railway authorities to the Sindh government in 1996-97 after which the Sindh Government allocated a grant of Rs.5 million for its maintenance. The amount was handed over to Railways, Sukkur Division, who maintained the road and according to the railway, Rs 2.8 million were spent on the maintenance of the road.

The remaining amount of Rs 2.2 million was never returned to the Sindh government. Mr. Pakwala also complained to the Governor that earlier the Highways Department, Sukkur, imposed a toll tax on this road and awarded contract to a private contractor which was challenged by the local lawyers in a court of law which declared it illegal.

Police arrested the driver, Anwer Zaman Pathan.

BODY RECOVERED: The SITE police recovered the body of an addict from the Sabzi Mundi, Sukkur.

Since it remained unclaimed it was handed over to the Edhi volunteers.
