KARACHI: Bandits rob consulate, govt officials of Rs1.3m

KARACHI, Dec 3: Bandits robbed a customs officer of one million rupees outside Metropolitan Bank on Rashid Minhas Road on Monday.
The police said that Saeed Ahmed, a customs collector, had withdrawn the cash from the bank and was about to sit in his car when three armed men, riding in a car, came there and snatched the cash from the customs officer at gunpoint and escaped.
Bandits robbed an official of the Moroccan Consulate of Rs300,000 in Clifton.
The police said that the bandits were fleeing after robbing an official of the Moroccan Consulate of Rs300,000 when the personnel of the Frontier Constabulary, deputed outside the consulate, opened fire at them. The bandits, however, managed to escape.
Robbers barged into the house of Zulfiqar in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and got away with gold jewellery worth 700,000 rupees.
Three more robberies were committed in the city.
Bandits dashed into the house of Shafqat in New Karachi and got away with cash and gold jewellery.
Dacoits robbed Abrar in a similar way in Korangi.
Bandits robbed a shopkeeper, Mushtaq, of cash and valuables in Gulbahar police limits.
DIES: A young shop assistant died when the gun of a private security guard went off accidentally in Clifton on Monday.
The police said that Liaquat Khan, aged 22, who worked as an assistant in a shop at a commercial centre in Clifton, died when the gun of a security guard went off accidentally. The security guard was on duty at a nearby shop.
The police said that the security guard, Majid Khan, aged 28, was on duty at a shop in a shopping centre near the Do Talwar in Clifton, when his gun went off accidentally seriously wounding Liaquat Khan, at a nearby shop.
Liaquat was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he died. The police claimed to have arrested the security guard on the spot.
Liaquat had come from Hazara Division of the NWFP several months back in search of work, the police said.
ACCIDENTS: A young man died in a road accident in Clifton on Monday.
The police said that a young motorcyclist, who was later identified as Irfan Jamshed, aged 25, was knocked down by a minibus of route-N (JE-9759) on Khayaban-i-Jami near the Schon Circle in Clifton. The young man died on the spot. The minibus driver escaped after the accident. The body was sent to the JPMC for post-mortem, the police said.
A young unidentified man was run over by a train at Drigh Road railway station while walking across the railway tracks.
WOUNDED: Bandits shot and wounded a private security guard during a bungled robbery in Site on Monday.
Six armed men barged into a textile mill in Site, overpowered the mill employees, and they began looting the mill workers at gunpoint.
Asghar Ali, a security guard, put up resistance to the bandits. The bandits became panicky and opened fire on Asghar and fled. A bullet hit Asghar in the abdomen. He was rushed to a hospital where he was stated to be in unstable condition. The bandits vanished after, reportedly, looting two traders in the same locality.
SHOOTOUT: A bandit was arrested during a shootout with the police in Saddar on Monday.
A patrolling police party spotted a gang of alleged criminals riding in a car near a jewellery shop in Saddar. The police asked the criminals to stop, but they opened fire at the police after which an exchange of fire between the criminals and the police ensued. The exchange of fire stopped when one of the suspects, identified as Javed, was arrested with a pistol.
The police claimed that the suspect was wanted in several criminal cases in the city.
No one was wounded in the exchange of fire.
DROWNED: The body of an unknown man was fished out of the sea near the Boat Basin garden on Monday. The police said that the unidentified man was in his early 50s with white hairs.
The body was sent to the JPMC for post-mortem. The cause of death had not been ascertained till the filing of this report.
