CBR seeks DGIA help: Over, under-reporting

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Dec 3: The Central Board of Revenue has sought help of the Director General Inspection and Audit (DGIA) to identify cases of over-reporting and under-reporting, said member, direct taxes and officials spokesman, Vakil Ahmed Khan.

The CBR has formally sent a request to the DGIA to trace such cases and officials who were involved in such practices.

He said that those officials if found guilty for over-reporting or under-reporting would be punished accordingly.

To reduce the menace of over-reporting or under-reporting, Mr Khan said the government was considering to do away with book adjustments for issuance of certificates to the taxpayers.

Under the new system, the income tax officials would issue cheques instead of certificates.

Furthermore, the spokesman said that the cheques would be issued with the help of National Bank of Pakistan.

He said that a software would be developed to maintain accounts of the taxpayers. The receipt would be accounted for this by the NBP and the bank may get the reconciliation done.

It may be added that adjustment was carried out by the tax authorities. Some times the tax authorities took credit on certificate produced by the taxpayers and the zonal officers gave the difference between the collection reported by the Data Processing Centre and by the accounting office AGPR in their monthly/annual returns. This type of arrangement sometimes results in duplication and over-reporting.
