EAST MEADOW (New York), Dec 1: Young Michael Phelps won his second event of the U.S. Open swimming championships by setting a meet record Friday in the 400-metre individual medley at the Nassau County Aquatics Center.
The 16-year-old Phelps, world record holder in the 200-meter butterfly, won with a time of 4:11.95, improving on the old standard by one and a half seconds and outdistancing his closest competitor by two and a half body lengths.
Phelps won the 200-metre individual medley on Thursday night.
In the 200-metre freestyle, Lindsay Benko out-touched Janelle Atkinson for the win with a time of 1:59.28 to avenge a loss to Atkinson in the 400 free on Thursday. The meeting concludes on Saturday.
