LAHORE, Nov 29: Shah Qublai Alam scored all the six goals, which constituted a double hat trick, but failed to save his Cherat side from a narrow 6-7 defeat from AAG team in the Ali Akbar polo tournament at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Thursday.
For the winning AAG side, Malik Asif Yar Tiwana struck thrice.
By virtue of this win, the AAG qualified for final of the competition which will be held on Dec 2.
In an important match of the tournament on Friday, Merry Max will play against Millat Tractors which will decide the other finalist side.
In other match held on Thursday, Shahid Aziz scored five goals, which included a hat-trick and helped Guard Rice defeat Garrison Golf Club 8-5. Guard Rice moved into subsidiary final of the tournament.
Malik Asif Yar Tiwana played a very important role, both in attack and defence, to carve out a win for AAG over the fighting Cherat side which was served very well by Qublai, who scored all the six goals.
However, Qublai’s effort fell a little short of requirement. For the winning AAG team, Shahid Iqbal struck twice while Taimur Mawaz Khan “Tony” and Mohsin Khosa scored one goal, each.
Shahid Aziz was in excellent form as he alone scored five goals for the winning Guard Rice side.
Strangely enough, the first chukker was totally dominated by Garrison Club which scored all the four goals to earn a 4-0 lead. Lt.-Col. Talat Zia and Havildar Amanat scored two goals, each during this chukker.
Talat Zia converted a 30 yards penalty-hit and so did Amanat. Second goals of both Talat Zia and Amanat were results of field efforts. Thereafter, the Guard Rice side braced its game and outplayed the Garrison Club.
At the start of the second chukker, Shahzad Aziz scored first of his five goals by converting a 30-yard penalty-hit. However, Major Jalil Aftab also converted a 30-yard penalty-hit for the Garrison side to raise its tally to five goals.
But that was the last happy moment for the Garrison team. Amjad scored his only goal for Guard Rice team on another 30-yard penalty-hit.
Taimur Malik scored first of his two field goals for Guard Rice, crowning a field effort to narrow the Garrison team’s lead to two goals (3-5) before this chukker ended.
All the three goals of the third chukker were scored by Shahzad Aziz, which constituted his hat-trick and took his individual tally to four goals. Shahzad did his hat-trick scoring two field goals and in between he converted a 30-yard penalty- hit. For the first time, Guard Rice side took the lead 6-5, as the third chukker was about to conclude.
Guard Rice added two more goals during the fourth chukker. Shahzad Aziz converted a 30-yard penalty-hit to score his fifth and Guard Rice’s seventh goal.
Taimur Malik crowned a field effort to give Guard Rice the final 8-5 win.
