58 schools remain closed for last 15 years

By Our Correspondent

LARKANA, Nov 29: The Hamdard Social Welfare Association, Kario Sabbar Khan village alleged that 58 primary schools in Warah taluka were closed for the last 15 years as a result of which education has been badly affected.

In a press statement on Thursday, Atta M Chandio, president of the Hamdard Social Welfare Association, said 52 primary schools for boys and six for girls had been shut for a year and only two schools were functioning.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, a group of villagers observed token hunger strike outside Jinnahbagh pressing the government for the early opening of closed schools along with the appointment of local teachers.

The teachers were led by Nazim M. Chandio, and Nabi Nazim Nawaz Chandio of the union council Mirpur.

Ghulam Mustafa Chandio alleged that the government had recently recruited only seven local teachers against 28 vacant posts. He urged the district government and the officials concerned to focus on appointing local teachers.

Sikandar Lakhir, district officer education (elementary), on Thursday held talks with the hunger strikers and pleaded them to call off the strike.

However, they turned down his demand underscoring the need for recruiting local teachers.
