KARACHI: Liver failure

Published November 30, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 29: The country requires some 2,000 livers and around 6,500 kidneys for transplantation annually, according to a Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation report.

Liver failure afflicts a large segment of Pakistani population, and liver transplantation becomes the ultimate and optimal treatment for the condition.

Basically four categories of patients require a liver transplant: chronic liver disease leading to cirrhosis and secondary to Hepatitis B and C, acute liver failure due to Hepatitis B, congenital metabolic disorders seen in children and localized small liver cancers.—APP
