MULTAN, Nov 28: Lack of teachers’ interest and pathetic attitude of the education department have jeopardized the future of boys and women degree colleges of Makhdoom Rashid.
In 1999 the Punjab government sanctioned two degree colleges on the basis of stop gap arrangement in Makhdoom Rashid. Classes started in the buildings donated by some philanthropists of the area. After two years, the colleges ceased functioning in 2001. But on the demand of the elected representatives of the area, the government has now granted them the permanent status of a degree college.
Despite passing three months since the start of classes, the education department has not yet posted the required number of teachers in these colleges. There are only five teachers in each college despite the fact they are degree colleges and not intermediate. There are no teachers for pre-medical, pre-engineering and computer education. Teachers are available only for the subjects for economics, Urdu, English and Islamiat.
Even the teachers who are serving in these colleges want them to be transferred to Multan colleges as a result of which they do not take interest in their duty.
The strength of teachers in the girls degree college has reduced to three as two teachers, including the principal, were relieved from the duty on Monday.
Different excuses have been given for not making appropriate arrangements for smooth working of these colleges. It has been said that students’ turnout in these colleges have been low. It may be noted that more than 100 students were admitted to the first year classes. Fifteen students of the Government College, Bosan Road, migrated to the Government Boys Degree College as they were the residents of Makhdoom Rashid.
Government College Makhdoom Rashid principal Prof Rahat, when contacted, said the government should now allocate sufficient budget and appoint more teachers in the colleges.
