MSF protest rally baton-charged

MUZAFFARABAD, Nov 28: Two activists of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and a policeman received minor injuries in a clash here on Wednesday at the Bank Road.

The clash erupted when the police barred the MSF activists from heading towards the road during their protest demonstration against Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s statement on Kashmir in India.

Witnesses told Dawn that Duty Magistrate Masoodur Rehman had reminded the protesters of their earlier commitment that they would not come on the main road, as it would disturb the flow of traffic and cause inconvenience to the public.

However, the protesters headed towards the road where some of them misbehaved with the police and tried to forcibly stop the vehicles. Police used batons and tear-gas to disperse them and the activists pelted the police with stones.

Later, the MSF activists assembled at a market off Bank Road, where the leaders delivered speeches against the administration.

They claimed that they were holding a peaceful demonstration and alleged that “pro-PPP elements” in the administration had meted out this treatment to them.

Muzaffarabad Deputy Commissioner Dr Mehmoodul Hassan said he had ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.
