LAHORE, Nov 28: The epidemic control system of the provincial metropolis has been paralysed by paucity of funds resulting in unrestricted multiplication of mosquitoes, flies and pests, MCL sources said.

The sources said funds had not been provided since June last year for the purchase of new fogging machines for insecticide spray. Of the 10 machines acquired in the 1980s, only four are now functioning in a satisfactory manner. Also, only Rs775,000 were provided for the purchase of insecticides last year against a requisition for Rs4.2 million. This year only a Rs100,000 advance was allowed.

The sources said at least 10 new fogging machines were required for control of insects and pests in the city but funds were not available even for the purchase of insecticides and spray of larvaecides. According to preventive health experts, twice a year larvaecide spray is required to restrict growth of insect populations.
